Lukas Looks for another Big Weekend with King Cotton Pair Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas will try to keep his momentum going after two stakes victories last week with another pair of victories Saturday. He will start both Laurie’s Rocket and Hamazing Destiny, the 5-2 favorite, in the $60,000 King Cotton at Oaklawn and last year’s Rebel Stakes runner-up Optimizer, the 7-2 favorite in the $125,000 Col. E.R. Bradley Handicap (G3) at Fair Grounds. Last Saturday, he won Fair Grounds Lecomte Stakes (G3) with Oxbow and Monday he won Oaklawn’s Smarty Jones Stakes with Will Take Charge. Read More

As a former basketball coach, Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas knows the importance of having a deep bench and his appears to be quite full after Oxbow and Will Take Charge both earned important Kentucky Derby prep victories and points last weekend. Oxbow easily won the $200,000 Lecomte Stakes (G3) at Fair Grounds last Saturday, while his stablemate Will Take Charge stayed home and won Monday’s $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes. Will Take Charge Caps Big Weekend for Lukas With Smarty Jones Win

Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas is back in a serious hunt for his 14th Triple Crown victory after Will Take Charge gave the trainer his second prep race victory of the weekend in Monday’s $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn. On Saturday, he had won the Lecomte Stakes with Oxbow at the Fair Grounds. Both races were worth 10 Kentucky Derby points to the winner based on the new criteria for making the field for the “Run to the Roses.” Read More

Sunday’s card at Oaklawn was highlighted by co-features for female sprinters and each winner served notice that they are forces to be reckoned with in their respective divisions. Poindexter Thoroughbreds’ American Sugar took the first step toward the $400,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3) April 10 with a dominating victory in the $60,000 Dixie Belle for 3-year-old fillies, while Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider’s Cheery looks ready to lead the older females after taking the $60,000 American Beauty Stakes. Trainer Bret Calhoun got the Oaklawn meet off to a fast start by winning the opening day Fifth Season Stakes with Donoharm and this weekend he will attempt to win two more stakes with Jemima’s Pearl and Minesave in Saturdray’s $75,000 Pippin Stakes and Sam’s Bliss in Sunday’s $60,000 American Beauty Stakes.
