Trainer Sal Santoro had never been to Oaklawn until a couple of weeks ago, but on the advice of fellow horsemen, who suggested the best route to Kentucky was through Hot Springs, he brought his star pupil, Rose to Gold, and a few other horses to town for the meet. Saturday, Rose to Gold takes the first step toward her ultimate goal of making the May 3 Kentucky Oaks (G1) when she starts as the 2-1 morning line favorite in Saturday’s $75,000 Martha Washington Stakes. Casner Racing’s Liberty Girl was one of the most impressive winners from opening day, Jan. 11, when she drew off to win a first level allowance race by 4 ½ lengths in her 3-year-old debut. On Saturday, the A.P. Warrior filly takes another step forward as one of nine fillies entered in the $75,000 Martha Washington Stakes. The one-mile race, part of Oaklawn’s series leading to the April 10 $400,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3), will offer a total of 17 points based on Churchill Downs’ new criteria for making the $1 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) May 3. Donoharm Extends Streak to Five with Essex Win

Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch’s Donoharm extended his win streak to five by overpowering heavy 3-5 favorite San Pablo in the final strides of Saturday’s $100,000 Essex Handicap at Oaklawn. Despite having won the Fifth Season Stakes opening day, the winner was dismissed at odds of nearly 8-1 and returned $17.40, $4.80 and $2.80. Read More
