Sittin at the Bar returns to Oaklawn for the first time since her fifth-place finish in last March’s Honeybee Stakes (G3) at 1 1/16 miles, but there are compelling reasons to expect she’ll fare much better in Saturday’s $100,000 Spring Fever Stakes. Although the Louisiana-bred 4-year-old filly is taking on older mares in open company, she is undefeated at the 5 1/2 f distance of the race and is riding a two-race win streak. Read More

TAPITURE WINS SOUTHWEST OVER STRONG MANDATE

Winchell Thoroughbred’s homebred Tapiture secured 10 points and a place along the Derby trail with his runaway victory in Monday’s $300,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) before a crowd of 25,622. Trainer Steve Asmussen said he will now continue down the path toward the April 12 Arkansas Derby and May 3 Kentucky Derby with a likely start in the $600,000 Rebel Stakes March 15. Read More

DON’T TELL SOPHIA COMES FROM LAST FOR BAYAKOA REPEAT

Don’t Tell Sophia wasn’t in a hurry leaving the gate, but she quickly got herself into gear and easily drew off to win her second straight $100,000 Bayakoa Stakes Sunday by three lengths. Last year, the heavy 2-to-5 favorite won both the Pippin and Bayakoa Stakes at Oaklawn and she had previously repeated her Pippin victory Jan. 18. Read More

Oaklawn Barn Notes Feb. 15

Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas has had a lot of luck preparing his young horses at Oaklawn for Triple Crown race success dating back to 1985 when Tank’s Prospect won the Arkansas Derby and then the Preakness Stakes. In 1996, the Lukas-trained Grindstone used a second in the Arkansas Derby as a launching pad to victory in the Kentucky Derby and most recently, Oxbow finished second to his champion stablemate Will Take Charge in the 2013 Rebel Stakes before going on to win the Preakness Stakes.
