Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas has had a lot of luck preparing his young horses at Oaklawn for Triple Crown race success dating back to 1985 when Tank’s Prospect won the Arkansas Derby and then the Preakness Stakes. In 1996, the Lukas-trained Grindstone used a second in the Arkansas Derby as a launching pad to victory in the Kentucky Derby and most recently, Oxbow finished second to his champion stablemate Will Take Charge in the 2013 Rebel Stakes before going on to win the Preakness Stakes. Coastline could fare no better than third in the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes here last month, but trainer Mark Casse thinks John Oxley’s colt deserves another chance to prove himself in Monday’s $300,000 Southwest Stakes (G3), especially since there are Kentucky Derby qualifying points to be earned along with the purse money. The Road to the Kentucky Derby cuts through Hot Springs on Monday, with 10-4-2-1 points to be awarded to the top four horses under the wire. Trainers Bret Calhoun and Cody Autrey decided to out fox Mother Nature and sent their Southwest Stakes (G3) prospects to Evangeline Training Center in Carencro, LA for their final workouts Wednesday in preparations for Monday’s race, a key stop along the Arkansas Derby (G1) trail. Carenco is about six hours south of Oaklawn, which was forced to cancel four days of training and racing because of winter weather. Read More

OAKLAWN CANCELS SUNDAY’S CARD

Oaklawn has cancelled its Sunday card because of lingering winter weather that has blasted Central Arkansas since Thursday. The cancellation marks the fourth straight day the track has been forced to cancel because of the weather. It also lost part of last Sunday’s card. Read More
