Trainer David Whited, a former top jockey at Oaklawn, went from having no stakes wins as a trainer at his home track to having two within a 24-hour period when Sanders Brothers’ All About Allie made a front-running score in Sunday’s $50,000 Rainbow Miss for Arkansas-bred 3-year-old fillies. As a jockey, David Whited had won many important races at Oaklawn Park, including a sweep of its 3-year-old series – the Southwest, Rebel and Arkansas Derby – in 1975 with Promised City. Jockey Calvin Borel, displaying the skills that earned him induction into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame Friday and a trip to Dubai Monday for an international jockey competition, piloted Randy Patterson’s Kate’s Main Man to a gate-to-wire victory in Sunday’s $100,000 Essex Handicap at Oaklawn Park. In the process, he turned the tables on even-money favorite Win Willy, who had gotten the better of him in the final strides of the Jan. 16 Fifth Season Stakes, but who had to settle for second today.
