HOT SPRINGS, AR (Saturday, Jan 18, 2014) – Don’t Tell Sophia didn’t let her fans that made her the prohibitive 2-to-5 favorite down when she drew off to win her second straight $100,000 Pippin Stakes Saturday before an on-track crowd of 12,248.

Ridden by Channing Hill, Don’t Tell Sophia settled into last place after an awkward start as Fully Living led the six-horse field through an opening half-mile in 46 1/5 and six furlongs in 1:11 1/5. The winner, racing four wide, began to make her move around the turn, gained the lead at the top of the stretch and drew off to win by 1 ½ lengths over the early leader. Sister Ginger, last year’s Martha Washington Stakes winner, came on late for third.

Don’t Tell Sophia finished the 1 1/16-mile race in 1:44 1/5 over a fast track. Sticks Wondergirl, Custody and millionaire Dixie Strike completed the order of finish.

“She’s all class,” said Hill. “That wasn’t much more than a workout for her. I handicapped the race, looked at all their numbers and it was a pretty even bunch. She won very easily. It was going to take a good horse to beat her today.”

Trainer Phil Sims, who co-owns the 6-year-old Congaree mare with Jerry Namy, said after the race that Don’t Tell Sophia will now be pointed toward a defense of her Bayakoa Stakes title Feb. 16 with her ultimate goal being the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap April 11.

“All the fillies in my barn, not just Sophia, love this track, love the weather and love the fans,” said Sims. “We’re so proud of her and we can’t wait to move forward with her.”

Don’t Tell Sophia returned $2.80, $2.60 and $2.10 as winner while improving her career record to 18-8-4-2. She now has earned $532,882.

Live racing at Oaklawn continues Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. first post and Monday with a special Martin Luther King Jr. Day card at 1 p.m. The Monday card will feature the $100,000 Smarty Jones Stakes and a free Oaklawn ball cap with paid admission.
