BBQ Championship, Kentucky Derby Simulcast Highlight May

Hot Springs, Ark. (Wednesday, April 16, 2014) – For the second straight year, Oaklawn is combining the region’s best BBQ competition with the Kentucky Derby simulcast at its Smokelawn event in the Infield Saturday, May 3. Gates will open for the free event at 10 a.m. and it will continue through the simulcast of the Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs.

Almost 50 teams have signed up to participate in the Smokelawn competition that is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and they will be competing for over $15,000 in prize money. Guests are invited to come enjoy the BBQ as well as live music from popular local artists, a Beer Garden offering craft beers, an antique motorcycle show and Kids Zone featuring inflatable rides and a petting zoo. Fans will also be able to enjoy all the racing action from Churchill Downs on the big screen monitor in the infield.

The festivities continue Monday, May 5 at Oaklawn’s “Plinko” de Mayo celebration in the gaming center from 5 to 10 p.m. There will be $5,000 in prize drawings throughout the night, $2 Drafts, $2 Margaritas and a $4.99 Taco Bar.

Oaklawn rounds out the month with the $100,000 Great Grill Giveaway. Guests have had the opportunity to earn entries since April 1 and on Memorial Day, May 26 more than 60 names will be drawn from among those entries throughout the day. Lucky patrons will win cash prizes or premium grills and at 4 and 9 p.m., two names will be drawn for a chance to play for the $100,000 Grand Prize.

Happy Hour returns in Pop’s Lounge every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 4 – 7 p.m. and will feature live music and $2 drafts and wine. Lagniappe Restaurant offers Southern Fried Wednesdays from 5 – 10 p.m. with finger-licking Catfish or Fried Chicken.
