Nearly 10,000 Food Items Collected for Hot Springs Charities
HOT SPRINGS, AR (Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013) – Oaklawn collected food for local charities from patrons and employees for the second straight year and nearly doubled the donations from 2012. Close to 10,000 cans of food and other non-perishable food items were collected between Nov. 10 and 17 and delivered Nov. 19 to Jackson House and Safe Haven just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.
“You can’t imagine how thrilled we are to receive this food,” said Janie Woodall Smith, Executive Director of Jackson House. “Our pantry was almost half empty and now it’s full. We were practically dancing around the office we were so happy to have this donation because it has been a struggle this year to keep up with the demand. Every can is precious to us and it will go to someone that truly appreciates it.”
“To almost double the donations from last years is really exciting,” said Director of Marketing Kim Baron. “It was a definite team effort between our guests and our employees, who came together to help make this holiday season a little better for a lot of people. We are honored to be able to help such deserving charities as Jackson House and Safe Haven.”
It took two box trucks to disperse the food that filled the lobby of Oaklawn’s gaming center. For their generosity, patrons were given two entries into a cash drawing held Nov. 17 for every one food item they brought in during the week. Many of them had 100 entries or more.
