For many racing fans it’s the final days of racing at Saratoga and Del Mar over Labor Day weekend that signals the end of summer more so than the actual holiday. Fortunately, there’s plenty of great racing in store before these marque tracks close their door on another season and Oaklawn will be the local place to catch all the action. Gates will open at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday for full-card simulcast racing from around the country.
Saratoga’s final Saturday is highlighted by two Grade 1 races – the $750,000 Woodward and $500,000 Forego Stakes – which both feature horses familiar to Oaklawn fans. 2009 Smarty Jones Stakes winner Flat Out, who has developed into one of the top handicap horses on the East coast, runs in the Woodward, while 2013 Count Fleet Sprint Stakes winner Justin Phillip goes for his second consecutive Grade 1 victory in the Forego. 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and 2013 Oaklawn Handicap runner Fort Larned had been entered in the Woodward, but had to be scratched with a minor injury.
The other two stakes on Saturday’s card at Saratoga are the $100,000 Speed Boat Stakes and the $250,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap. Del Mar will feature the $300,000 Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante for 2-year-old fillies where Oaklawn favorite Bob Baffert has three entries - Awesome Baby, Fascinating and Secret Compass.
