Four-Day Opening Weekend Kicks Off Oaklawn's 2012 Season

56-Day Live Meet Begins Friday, Jan. 13

In Arkansas, there are five seasons – Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall and the Oaklawn live meet, which is set to start Friday, Jan. 13 with the aptly named $75,000 Fifth Season Stakes. Other highlights of the four-day opening weekend are the traditional 50-cent Corn Beef Sandwiches Saturday, Jan. 15 and Oaklawn Ball Caps will be given away with each paid admission while supplies last Monday, Jan. 16, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In addition to Jan. 16, Oaklawn will also host a special Monday card on President’s Day, Feb. 20, which will feature the $55,000 Progressive Cash Giveaway. The Monday cards will also be highlighted by the first two races in Oaklawn’s 3-year-old colt and gelding series, the $100,000 Smarty Jones on Jan. 16 and the $250,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) on Feb. 20.

The series, which has produced six Triple Crown race winners since 2004, continues Saturday, March 17 with the $500,000 Rebel Stakes (G2), which received a $200,000 purse increase in 2012, and culminates Saturday, April 14 with the $1 million, Arkansas Derby. One lucky fan will leave Rebel Stakes Day with a new boat and truck courtesy of Bradford Marine as this popular promotion returns to the lineup.

The regular live racing schedule will be Thursdays – Sundays. First post is 1:30 p.m. (Central) weekdays and Sundays and 1 p.m. (Central) Saturdays and holiday Mondays.
