Shortleaf Stable/ John Ed Anthony

• Owner John Ed Anthony, a 1961 graduate of the Univ. of Arkansas, is the chairman of his family-owned
timber company, Anthony Timberlands, based in southern Arkansas since 1907. For his achievements in
racing, particularly in Arkansas, he was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
• With his former wife Mary Lynn Dudley, Anthony’s Loblolly Stable bred and raced notable champions starting
with Temperence Hill, winner of the 1980 Arkansas Derby and Belmont Stakes, and followed closely by
Vanlandingham, the 1985 champion older horse, who helped launch the career of Hall of Fame trainer Shug
McGaughey. In 1992 and ’93, he won back-to-back editions of the Preakness Stakes in with Pine Bluff and
Prairie Bayou. The latter would be named champion 3-year-old that year.
• Now racing as Shortleaf Stable with his current wife Isabel, Anthony has won the Fantasy once (Aztec Hill,
1993), the Oaklawn Handicap twice (Cox’s Ridge, 1978; Temperence Hill 1981), the Rebel Stakes five times
(Temperance Hill, 1980, Vanlandingham, 1984, Demons Begone, 1987, Pine Bluff, 1992 and Dalhart,
1993) and the Arkansas Derby three times (Temperence Hill; Demons Begone, and Pine Bluff).
• In 2012, the stable was led by Atigun, who began his year winning an allowance race at Oaklawn and ended
it with a third in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon. He also finished third in the Belmont Stakes.
