RON MOQUETT

Born: 8/31/71, Fort Smith, Ark.

Resides: Fort Smith, Ark.

  • Thanks to the 3-year-old filly Amie’s Dini, Moquett had a particularly good 2012 meet, winning 11 races, including the Martha Washington with the filly, who was also second in the Honeybee and third in the Fantasy.
  • Born and raised in Fort Smith, Ark., trainer Ron Moquett began attending races at Oaklawn Park at a young age and decided early on he wanted to be a trainer.
  • Although he admits cutting classes to go to the races, Moquett completed a degree from the University of Arkansas.
  • Started out with trainer Bernie Flint. He moved up from hotwalker to foreman before going on his own in 1996. He currently races in Arkansas, Kentucky and Delaware.
  •  Known for his ability to bring new owners into the business, Moquett puts together partnerships under his Southern Springs Stable banner.
  • His biggest stars were Rare Money and Mystery Giver until shocking the field in the 2006 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) at Churchill Downs with Seek Gold. In recent years, he built on that Grade 1 victory to get other top-level horses such as Asher and Go Now.
