Pin Oak Stable/ Josephine Abercrombie

• Pin Oak Stable is the racing arm of Pin Oak Stud, a 750-acre full service Thoroughbred breeding operation in
Versailles, Ky owned by Josephine Abercrombie. Among the best horses bred by Pin Oak was 1976 Arkansas
Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Elocutionist
• The star of the stable in 2012 was homebred Alternation, who remains in training for 2013. The Donnie K. Von
Hemel trainee won three stakes at Oaklawn last year, including the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap as well as the
Pimlico Special and Governors Cup.
• A skilled equestrienne as a youth, Abercrombie was a champion show rider of gaited horses and a record holder
at Madison Square Garden for prizes won in a single season. In 1949, she took an interest in Thoroughbred
racing and set up a racing syndicate involving her father, an uncle and a couple of friends to purchase yearlings
for training and racing.
• Pin Oak, which was the 1995 National Breeder of the Year, is home to about 40 broodmares and stallions Bob
and John, Cowboy Cal, Broken Vow and Sky Classic. It had been home to top stallion Mariah’s Mon until his
death in 2007.
