Phil Sims

Birth Date: 9/26/1961, Flemingsburg, Kentucky

· Made a name for himself in his first year at Oaklawn as his star filly, Don’t Tell Sophia, won not only the Pippin and Bayakoa Stakes, but also ran second in the Grade 3 Azeri Stakes and third in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom. Given the summer off, she returned to win the Chilukki Stakes at Churchill Downs in the fall.

  • · Grew up on a Kentucky farm knowing that his career path was leading straight to the racetrack. After taking out his trainer’s license in 1980, it didn’t take long before he made his first trip the winners circle with Bodash, a horse he owned, at Latonia now known as Turfway Park.

    · Sims had the standout-filly Hot Cha Cha in 2009, who gave him his first graded stakes win in the Grade 3 Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway, and then went on the score in the Grade 3 Pucker Up. In the same year she gave Sims his first Grade 1 victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes at Keeneland. In 2010, she won the Grade 3 Early Times Mint Julep Handicap at Churchill Downs.

    · Keeping the love of thoroughbred racing in the family, his oldest of two sons, Matt, is his assistant.
