Phil Sims
Birth Date: 9/26/1961, Flemingsburg, Kentucky
Residence: Lexington, KY
- Trainer Phil Sims wasted little time introducing himself to the Oaklawn fans. From his first five starters he won two races, including the $75,000 Pippin Stakes with Don’t Tell Sophia. He is spending his first winter in Hot Springs after being primarily based in Kentucky.
- Sims grew up on a Kentucky farm and was always around horses. He took out his trainer’s license in 1980 and still has a farm in Scott County, Ky., where he raises cattle and hay.
- In 2009, the outstanding filly Hot Cha Cha gave Sims his first graded win, the G3 Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway, and his first G1 win, the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland later that year. The filly also won the 2009 Pucker Up at Arlington and the 2010 Mint Julep at Churchill Downs, both G3 events.
- His oldest of two sons, Matt, is his chief assistant.
