Millsap Stables Betty & Leon Millsap
- Leon Millsap moved from his family poultry business in Danville, Ark., into the hobby of breeding and racing Thoroughbreds starting in 1983 when he purchased a handful of runners and raced them at Louisiana Downs. That hobby became more involved through associations with David and Danny Whited. The team sent Flag Carrier to the 1 3/4-miles Oaklawn track record in 1987.
- By 1990, the filly Through Flight gave the Millsaps a career highlight by winning the Arlington Washington Lassie in Chicago and finishing fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
- By the mid-2000s, the Millsaps came to dominate the state-bred scene as the owners of the stallion Storm and a Half. He produced four stakes winners in each of his first two crops including Downthedustyroad, the first registered Arkansas-bred to win a Grade 1 stakes when she took the 2007 La Brea at Santa Anita. Downthedustyroad now has one of Oaklawn’s newest Arkansas-bred Stakes races named for her.
- Storm and a Half helped the Millsaps amass several titles from the Arkansas Thoroughbred Breeders & Horsemen’s Association including a lifetime achievement honor in 2009. Other stars include Rita Katrina, Stormy Destin, Brassie Prince, Brassy Boy and Devil in a Half, winner of the 2012 Arkansas Breeders’ Stakes.
