  • A top trainer on the Oaklawn – Lone Star Park – Remington Park circuit, trainer Joe Petalino returns to Oaklawn for his 25th consecutive meet.
  • Petalino was Oaklawn’s leading trainer in 2000 with 32 victories.
  • Among his most recent stable stars at Oaklawn were Cosmo Girl, winner of the 2011 Carousel Stakes and JP’s Gusto, second in the 2011 Southwest Stakes. Other top horses include Really Polish, winner of the 1999 Bayakoa and 2000 Pippin Stakes, Bedroom Blues, winner of the 1997 Pippin, and Trickey Crew, winner of the 1999 Mountain Valley Stakes.
  • In 1998, he set a record at Remington for single-season victories (69). It stood for 11 years, until Steve Asmussen broke it in 2009
  • Is one of several trainers to come up under the tutelage of Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg. Petalino spent 10 years working for Van Berg and is among a long list of successful protégés that includes Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, Frank Brothers and Loren Rettele. During his time with Van Berg he galloped his 1987 Kentucky Derby winner Alysheba and his 1984 Preakness winner Gate Dancer.
