  • Trainer Dale Romans comes into his first meet at Oaklawn as the Eclipse Award winning trainer of 2012. His career year, which included eight Grade 1 wins, culminated with Little Mike winning the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf and Shackleford closing out his stellar career by winning the Clark Handicap (G1) at Churchill.
  • Earned his first Triple Crown race victory when Shackleford won the 2011 Preakness Stakes over Derby winner Animal Kingdom. This win came one year after “hitting the board” in all three Triple Crown races in 2010. Paddy O’Prado finished third in the Kentucky Derby and First Dude was second in the Preakness and third in the Belmont.
  • Romans ended 2011 pulling the upset in the Breeders’ Cup Mile with Court Vision, who went off at 64-1. Other top horses in recent years include Dullahan, Tapitsfly, Silver Max, C.S. Silk, Sassy Image and Afleeting Lady.
  • Experienced his breakout year in 2004 thanks in part to Champion Turf Horse Kitten’s Joy, runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, and Whitney Handicap (G1) winner Roses in May, runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
  • Grew up on the Churchill Downs backstretch learning his trade from his father, Jerry Romans, who passed away in 2000.
