- The Hall of Fame trainer earned his second Oaklawn training title in 2011 with 27 victories. Among his best runners in 2012 was Absinthe Minded, winner of the Pippin and Bayakoa and Optimizer, runner-up in the Rebel Stakes.
- Extended his record number of Breeders’ Cup wins to 19 when Hightail won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint. Leads all trainers in wins and earnings at the Breeders’ Cup.
- Has trained 24 champions, among them three Horse of the Year winners: Lady's Secret in 1986, Criminal Type in 1990 and Charismatic in 1999.
- Has won 13 Triple Crown races, tying him with Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons; has won four Kentucky Derbys, five Preakness Stakes and four Belmonts. At one point, won five straight Triple Crown races, beginning with the Preakness in 1994 with Tabasco Cat through a sweep of the 1995 races with different horses and the 1996 Derby.
- Has four Eclipse Awards as champion trainer. Became the all-time money-winning trainer in 1988 and first trainer to top $100 million in purse earnings, as well as topping the $200 million mark.
- The former teacher and basketball coach began his career with Quarter Horses. Turned to Thoroughbreds in 1978.
