Monday, October 05, 2009

Runners from Oaklawn Park once again performed with style, winning some of the most important races of the weekend and, perhaps, punching a Breeders' Cup ticket for each. In the case of Drs. K.K. and Devi Jayaraman's Summer Bird, the win in Saturday's $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup probably also put a lock on the 2009 Eclipse Award for the outstanding three-year-old colt or gelding.
Summer Bird, Lewis Lakin's Pure Clan and Fox Hill Farm and Vinery Stable's Kodiak Kowboy all put in winning performances over the sloppy and soft going at Belmont Park on Saturday afternoon and did…

Dublin's Saratoga Win Makes Him Early Arkansas Derby Favorite
Wednesday, September 09, 2009

Talk about a winning combination. Take Hall-of-Fame trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, add an offspring of former Oaklawn great, Afleet Alex, ridden by a former Oaklawn riding champion, Jamie Theriot, and you have the description of the win by the flashy colt, Dublin, in Monday's $300,000 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga.
Since losing his first race after stumbling at the start of a five furlong event at Churchill Downs in June, Dublin has done nothing wrong for his famous trainer. His next start was at six furlongs on August 1 at Saratoga and the pace-stalking son of Afleet Alex-Classy Mirage pulled…

Rachel Alexandra Hangs on for Historic Win in Woodward
Saturday, September 05, 2009

Rachel Alexandra went to the lead at the start under jockey Calvin Borel, held the lead while setting a quick pace, then was all out to hold off the late-running Macho Again and score an historic win in Saturday's featured $750,000 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga.
Virtually cinching Horse-of-the-Year honors, the three-year old filly became the first three-year-old filly to beat older runners in a Grade 1-level stakes in New York State in over 100 years. But it did not come easily for the daughter of former Oaklawn Handicap winner, Medaglia d'Oro. As Calvin Borel went to the whip repeatedly…

Summer Bird continued the dream year for Hot Springs residents, Drs. Gayego, 2008 Arkansas Derby Winner, Returns With Saratoga Win on Monday
Monday, August 17, 2009

Gayego, winner of the 2008 Arkansas Derby returned to action with a workmanlike victory as the 3-5 favorite in Monday's third race at Saratoga. The Saeed bin Suroor charge did not break cleanly and raced in last early, but under a patient Alan Garcia, he gradually cruised into contention on the far turn. Gayego had to dig a bit to overhaul Digger in the stretch of the allowance race, eventually inching away to score by one length.
Now owned by Godolphin, Gayego completed six furlongs on the fast track in 1:09 1/5 to improve his career mark to 12-6-3-0,…

Honeybee Winner Just Jenda Airs in Monmouth Oaks
Sunday, August 16, 2009

Larry Jones had only earlier in the morning spoken with Oaklawn's Terry Wallace on the Oaklawn Handicapper's Hour, talking about how well Just Jenda (pictured here) was doing heading into Saturday's Monmouth Oaks.He couldn't have been happier with the results as his three-year-old filly, winner of the Honeybee at Oaklawn, drew off to a convincing four-and-a-quarter lengths score in the $200,000 Monmouth feature on Saturday afternoon.
If you drop Rachel Alexandra from consideration, an argument could be made that Jones might be able to handle any of the remainder of the three-year-old filly division with either Just Jenda or…
